Hawke's Bay
Hawke's Bay has long been a centre of agricultural and horticultural excellence. The Heretaunga plains at the confluence of the 3 great rivers of the region hosts the country’s largest concentration of pip and stone fruit orchards, process crops and market gardens, and the surrounding rural areas produce high quality lamb, beef and venison.
The seafood industry also has a significant presence here, soon to be augmented by a major offshore mussel farm. Recently, alternative horticultural activities such as organic produce, olives and lavender have helped to provide a broader base for the region.
Recently Wine & Food tourism has been developed and promoted to attract more visitors to Hawke’s Bay. Highlights of the region include Napier’s unique Art Deco architecture and the Spanish Mission style of Hastings, as well as the Cape Kidnappers gannet colony, the National Aquarium, hot air ballooning, trout fishing, the wine trail and many other activities. Combined, these provide a great range of diverse and exciting options for visitors.
Hawke's Bay is less than 2 hours drive from Taupo making the Auckland - Taupo - Hawke's Bay - Wellington route very popular.
